I have voted in favour of the mobilization of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund regarding Andersen Ireland and similar cases brought before this House, because workers who are being adversely affected by globalization deserve support.

Were it not so, I would have voted against. Globalization is not only experienced when businesses close down or when they reduce their number of employees as a result of recession.

Beyond the effects of 2008, globalization has led to large disruptions within and between nations. Trade and investment have been disrupted in countries adjacent to Russia and the so-called Arab Spring countries, including Libya. The worst affected are small businesses that invested heavily in trade relations which today are undermined by warlike or terrorist activities against the backdrop of civil war.

Firms hit by these events, which lost jobs and business, should also be supported in the same way as businesses adversely affected by globalization.

The Commission’s response to my question on this issue was most unsatisfactory.

It is unfair that the workers of SMEs, which invested in Libya for instance, and are now facing huge difficulties, are not treated the same way as companies and workers presently benefitting from the EGF.

Spjegazzjoni tal-vot fuq il-Mobilizzazzjoni tal-Fond Ewropew ta’ Aġġustament għall-Globalizzazzjoni: applikazzjoni EGF/2014/007/Andersen Ireland – 13.11.2014

Ivvotajt favur il-vot għall-mobilizzazzjoni tal-Fond Ewropew li jaġġusta għall-globalizzazzjoni fir-rigward ta’ Andersen Ireland u f’każijiet oħra simili li tressqu quddiem din il-Kamra. Għamilt dan għax il-ħaddiema li ntlaqtu ħażin mill-globalizzazzjoni jixiriqilhom l-appoġġ meħtieġ.

Kieku ma kienx għalhekk, kont nivvota kontra. L-effetti tal-globalizzazzjoni ma jinħassux biss meta azjendi jagħlqu jew inaqqsu n-nies b’riżultat ta’ riċessjoni.

Lil hinn mill-effetti tal-2008, il-globalizzazzjoni wasslet għal disturbi kbar fi ħdan u bejn il-ġnus. Fil-pajjiżi ta’ madwar ir-Russja u l-pajjiżi tal-hekk imsejjħa “rebbiegħa Għarbija”, inkluża l-Libja, id-disturbi ħarbtu l-kummerċ u l-investiment. L-aktar milquta huma azjendi żgħar li nvestew bil-kbir f’rabtiet li llum huma milquta mill-ħerba ta’ kważi gwerra jew ta’ ħidmiet terroristiċi fi sfond ta’ gwerra ċivili.

Ikun xieraq li azjendi li ntlaqtu b’dan il-mod u tilfu x-xogħol jingħataw appoġġ bħal ma jiġri fil-kaz ta’ azjendi oħra li ntlaqtu ħażin mill-globalizzazzjoni.

Meta saqsejt lill-Kummissjoni dwar hekk, ingħatajt tweġiba xejn sodisfaċenti.

Mhix ħaġa ġusta li impriżi ta’ daqs mezzan jew ċkejken, li investew ngħidu aħna f’pajjiż bħal-Libja u issa jinsabu f’qagħda tassew diffiċli mhumiex jingħataw l-istess trattament mill-Unjoni bħal Andersen Ireland u kumpaniji u ħaddiema oħra fl-istess qagħda.
