Can the Commission give the following information on each EU island region at NUTS levels 2 and 3:
1. The number of new businesses created annually per thousand inhabitants for the years 2000 to 2013?
2. The number of new businesses created annually per thousand inhabitants for the years 2000 to 2013 expressed as a percentage of the EU average?

The Honourable Member will find the requested information in the Annex as follows:

1. Concerning the number of annually created new businesses per thousand inhabitants on each EU island region at NUTS levels 2 and 3, please see table 1 and 2. The available data are based on the implemented feasibility study in 17 Member States for the reference years 2008, 2009 and 2010. The partial completeness is due to the fact that there is not a regular annual data collection of new busineses at NUTS level, however, the adoption of a legal requirement is currently under consideration.

2. Data on the number of new businesses per thousand inhabitants expressed as a percentage of the EU average are presented in table 3 and 4. Due to the lack of information on all EU island regions, the EU average is calculated based on island regions for which data are available.

3. Concerning the size of new businesses created annually for the years 2000 to 2013 on each EU island region at NUTS levels 2 and 3, please see table 5 and 6. The available data are for the reference years 2008, 2009 and 2010.

4. Data on the size of all businesses at the end of 2012 and 2013, on each EU island region at NUTS levels 2 and 3, are not available.

5. Concerning the overall size of all businesses at the end of 2012 and 2013 for the EU25, EU27 and EU28, please see table 7. The measurement of the average size of enterprises is possible in terms of the number of persons employed per one enterprise. The latest available data are for the reference year 2012.

EU island regions are defined as NUTS 2 or NUTS 3 regions entirely insular or part of islands without a fixed link (bridge, tunnel) to the mainland.
