Fi stqarrija ippreżentata fil-Parlament Ewropew b’rabta ma’ dibattitu fil-plenarja tal-Parlament Ewropew dwar is-sitwazzjoni fil-Libja, l-eks Prim Ministru iddikjara li dawn l-aġendi moħbija jinkludu aċċess għall-provvisti taż-żejt; interessi strateġiċi fl-Afrika sub-Saħarjana; operazzjonijiet finanzjarji okkulti, tal-passat u tal-preżent; immigrazzjoni lejn l-Ewropa; aspirazzjoni li tinkiseb influwenza akbar fl-ispazju tal-Mediterran.

Alfred Sant qal li l-indħil barrani fil-Libja żdied fl-aħħar xhur. Matul is-snin, dan kompla jkabbar l-instabilità li kienet diġà karatteristika predominanti tas-soċjetà Libjana – l-organizzazzjoni tribali tagħha.

“Wieħed jista’ jara ftit prospetti ta’ paċi fil-Libja sakemm l-aġendi moħbija jsiru espliċiti u allinjati mal-interessi tan-nies Libjani.”, qal Alfred Sant.

Konferenzi formali li jippruvaw iġibu flimkien “in-naħat kollha” iżda jżommu l-aġendi moħbija x’aktarx li huma destinati għal falliment. Alfred Sant esprima t-tama li dan ma jseħħx.

Imma jekk jiġri hekk, u t-taqlib attwali jibqa’ jippersisti, allura soluzzjoni waħda biss tibqa’ li tista’ tagħmel sens fuq medda ta’ żmien, mill-ġdid fl-interessi tal-poplu Libjan – dik militari li ġġib l-istabbiltà u s-sigurtà interna fit-territorju Libjan sħiħ.

Alfred Sant says foreign interference to blame for Libya crisis

In a written statement submitted in relation to a European Parliament Plenary Debate on the Situation in Libya, the former Prim Minister states that these hidden agendas include access to oil supplies; strategic interests in sub-Saharan Africa; occult financial operations, past and present; immigration towards Europe; aspirations to achieve greater influence in the Mediterranean space.

Dr Sant said that foreign interference in Libya has increased in recent months. Along the years, it has exacerbated the instability already inherent in a predominant feature of Libyan society – its tribal organization.

“One can see little prospects of peace in Libya unless the hidden agendas are made explicit and aligned with the interests of the Libyan people, only they – those living in the coastal cities and in the hinterland”, said Dr Sant.

Formal conferences that try to bring “all sides” together but retain the hidden agendas are quite likely destined to eventual failure and Dr Sant expressed hope that this will not happen.

But if it does, and the current turmoil persists, then only one solution will remain that could over the medium term make sense, again in the interests of the Libyan people – a military one that brings stability and internal security to the Libyan territory as one whole.
