Fir-reazzjoni tiegħu għad-diskors fil-Parlament Ewropew minn Ursula Von der Leyen, il-President tal-Kummissjoni Ewropea dwar l-istat tal-Unjoni, l-MPE Laburista Alfred Sant saħaq li għalkemm id-diskors stabbilixxa ton ottimist, ma kienx adegwat fl-evalwazzjoni tal-inċertezzi emerġenti u sfidi diffiċli oħra li qed jiffaċċjaw l-Istati Membri ta’ l-UE. L-eks Prim Ministru Sant irrimarka li Von der Leyen injorat id-diffikultajiet attwali ta’ ġestjoni tal-pajjiżi taż-Żona Ewro. Il-proposti tagħha biex tiġġieled l-inugwaljanzi soċjali kienu timidi. Ftit kellha xi tgħid dwar il-politika tal-immigrazzjoni, u dwar it-triq ‘il quddiem dwar il-Green Deal u d-diġitalizzazzjoni.

L-Istat ta’ l-Unjoni huwa diskors annwali li jsir mill-President tal-Kummissjoni Ewropea lill-Parlament Ewropew. Dan jinkludi rendikont tal-kisbiet tas-sena li għaddiet u jistabbilixxi l-prijoritajiet għas-sena li ġejja.

L-MPE Laburista rrikonoxxa u faħħar ix-xogħol iebes u ta’ suċċess tal-UE fir-rigward tat-trattament tal-pandemija. Madankollu, huwa ddispjaċih għall-fatt li minflok ma jibni fuq dak li nkiseb, kwistjonijiet ġodda qed jiġu introdotti li qed jimmiraw malajr wisq għal “livelli oħra ta’ Integrazzjoni Ewropea.”

“Qabel ma jmorru għal proġetti kbar ġodda ta’ integrazzjoni, dawk li jfasslu l-politika ta’ l-UE għandhom jiffokaw fuq it-tisħiħ tal-modus operandi attwali filwaqt li jimmiraw li jiksbu livell aktar sinifikanti ta’ leġittimità demokratika,” qal Dr Alfred Sant.

Timid and inadequate, except for action on the pandemic

In his reaction to the speech in the European Parliament by Ursula Von der Leyen, the European Commission President on the state of the Union, Labour MEP Alfred Sant stressed that though the speech set an optimistic tone, it was inadequate in evaluating emerging uncertainties and other difficult challenges facing EU Member States. Former Prime Minister Sant pointed out that Von der Leyen brushed over the current management difficulties of Eurozone countries. Her proposals to combat social inequalities were timid. She had little new to say about immigration policy, and on the way forward on the Green Deal and digitalization.

The State of the Union is an annual speech delivered by the President of the European Commission to the European Parliament. It includes a résumé of the achievements of the past year and sets forth the priorities of the coming year.

The Labour MEP acknowledged and praised the hard and successful work of the EU in dealing with the pandemic. However, he lamented the fact that instead of building on what has been achieved, new issues are introduced that aim too fast at “further levels of European Integration.”

“Before heading for new major projects of integration, EU policymakers should focus on strengthening the current modus operandi while aiming to attain a more meaningful level of democratic legitimacy,” Dr Alfred Sant stated.
