Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant said today that Europe must ensure that Libya does not end up as a foyer for terrorism. The Maltese MEP, in an intervention at the European Parliament on the situation in Libya, said Europeans have the duty to demonstrate that their major interest in Libya is the welfare of the Libyan people. Not oil. Not who is to control the entrance to Africa’s mineral resources.

First, we need to agree on the essentials. For Europe, what is essential should be that Libya does not end up as a foyer for terrorism.

Alfred Sant said the Libyan people need stability. With it, someday, later or sooner, peace and democracy might take root. Without stability, this will not happen.

“We should not endeavour to ensure that as soon as possible, a regime is established in Libya that we like, for one reason or another.”

Foreign interference in Libyan affairs has led to the anarchic situation that now prevails.

“Europeans bear a great responsibility for this.”

The Maltese MEP said we should support all efforts undertaken in good faith to allow all forces in Libya that represent genuine interests to have voice and reach. But in this process, we cannot continue to agree with the paralysis that prevails in how the Libyan people is proceeding to establish national institutions.

“Our support should go to those forces which are ready to unite in order to contain the existing anarchy, provide security to the Libyan people and move the country towards the stability that is essential if Libyan society is to function normally.”

Maltese Version – L-EWROPA TRID TIŻGURA LI L-LIBJA MA SSIRX BEJTA TAT-TERRORIŻMU

Alfred Sant qal illum li l-Ewropa trid tiżgura li l-Libja ma ssirx bejta tat-terroriżmu f’intervent li għamel dwar is-sitazzjoni fil-Libja fil-Parlament Ewropew. L-Ewropej għandhom id-dmir li juru kif l-akbar interess tagħhom fil-Libja hu l-ġid tal-poplu Libjan. Mhux iż-żejt. Mhux min se jikkontrolla d-daħla lejn ir-riżorsi minerali tal-Afrika Ċentrali.

“L-ewwel irridu naqblu fuq l-essenzjali. Għall-Ewropa, l-essenzjali għandu jkun li l-Libja ma tispiċċax bejta għat-terroriżmu.”

Il-poplu Libjan għandu bżonn l-istabbiltà. Minnha, xi darba, tard jew kmieni, forsi se jinbtu l-paċi u d-demokrazija. Mingħajr l-istabbiltà xejn minn dan ma jista’ jiġri.

M’għandniex naħdmu biex fil-Libja, malajr kemm jista’ jkun, jitwaqqaf reġim li jogħġobna għal raġuni jew oħra. L-indħil barrani fit-tmexxija tal-Libja wassal għall-qagħda ta’ anarkija li teżisti bħalissa.

“F’dan, l-Ewropej iġorru responsabbiltà kbira. Għandna ngħinu, iva, f’kull sforz ta’ rieda tajba li jsir biex il-forzi kollha fil-Libja li jirrappreżentaw interessi ġenwini jkunu mismugħa u mogħtija saħħa. Imma f’dal-proċess, ma nistgħux nibqgħu naqblu mal-paraliżi eżistenti f’kif il-poplu Libjan jista’ jipproċedi biex iwaqqaf istituzzjonijiet nazzjonali.”

L-appoġġ tagħna għandu jingħata lil dawk il-forzi li lesti f’għaqda bejniethom irażżnu l-anarkija preżenti, jipprovdu sigurtà lill-poplu Libjan u jressqu lill-pajjiż lejn l-istabbiltà essenzjali biex is-soċjetà Libjana tkun tista’ tiffunzjona b’mod normali, qal Alfred Sant.
