The GWU will hold meetings between its Union Secretaries and the Office of MEP Alfred Sant on decisions taken by the EU and its institutions on matters of interest to its members. This was agreed between Dr Sant and Mr Josef Bugeja, GWU Secretary General during a meeting proposed by the GWU with the Head of the Labour Party Delegation at the European Parliament.
Precarious work and anomalies in salaries between workers in the public and private sectors topped the agenda. Both sides agreed that the EU’s one-size-fits-all-policy was not in the interests of the small EU states.
Dr Sant recalled that last week he intervened with Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis to reconsider the application of a one-year delay for the implementation of the Insurance Distribution Directive on the specific request of the Maltese insurance industry.
Mr Bugeja expressed his concerns on the effects of Brexit on local export industries to the UK. Dr Sant said that the EU-UK negotations still had to shed light on the effects on local industries, Maltese students’ in UK Universities and the effects on ‘life-pensions’ with UK companies.
Mr Bugeja was accompanied by Mr Victor Carachi and Mr Kevin Camilleri.

Maltese Version – IS-SEGRETARJI TAL-GWU AĠĠORNATI BL-AĦĦAR ŻVILUPPI FL-EWROPA MILL-UFFIĊĊJU TA’ ALFRED SANT

Il-GWU se torganizza laqgħat mas-segretarji tagħha u mal-uffiċċju ta’ Alfred Sant dwar deċiżjonijiet u istituzzjonijiet tal-Unjoni Ewropea li jinteressaw lill-ħaddiema Maltin u Għawdxin. Dan intqal waqt laqgħa li Alfred Sant kellu mas-Segretarju Ġenerali tal-GWU Josef Bugeja. Kienet il-GWU li ssuġġeriet il-laqgħa mal-Kap tad-Delegazzjoni Laburista fil-Parlament Ewropew li matulha ġew diskussi r-riperkussjonijiet tal-aħħar żviluppi fl-UE fuq il-ħaddiema Maltin u Għawdxin.
Kien hemm qbil li l-politika ta’ one-size-fits-all hija ta’ dannu għall-istati membri żgħar tal-UE, inkluż Malta. Iż-żewġ naħat iddiskutew il-problema tal-prekarjat, id-differenza fil-pagi għall-istess xogħol bejn impjegati tal-gvern u dawk tal-privat.
Il-GWU esprimiet it-tħassib tagħha dwar l-effetti tal-Brexit fuq industriji li jesportaw lejn ir-Renju Unit. Dr Sant qal li għad irid ikun magħruf l-eżitu tan-negozjati tal-Brexit fuq l-esportazzjoni lejn ir-Renju Unit, il-futur tal-istudenti f’Universitajiet Britanniċi u x’se jkun deċiż dwar ‘life-pensions’ ma’ kumpaniji fir-Renju Unit.
Dr Sant semma d-direttiva tal-assigurazzjoni fejn kumpaniji Maltin tal-assigurazzjoni qegħdin jitolbu aktar żmien biex ikunu jistgħu japplikaw id-direttivi deċiżi mill-Kummissjoni Ewropea. “Huwa importanti li l-vuċi tal-istati membri ż-żgħar tinstema’ mill-Kummissjoni Ewropea għax waqt li stati kbar bħall-Ġermanja u Franza jistgħu jimplimentaw id-direttivi kif deċiż mill-KE, dan ma jistax isir minn kumpaniji fi stati żgħar bħal Malta.”
Is-Sur Josef Bugeja kien akkumpanjat mis-Sur Victor Carachi u s-Sur Kevin Camilleri.
