Maltese MEP Alfred Sant told the European Parliament in Strasbourg that the weaknesses within the European Union result from developments within the Union, not from unforeseen events happening outside or inside Europe. Dr. Sant, reacting to President Jean-Claude Juncker’s first ‘State of the Union speech before the European Parliament, said the reasons for the weaknesses being demonstrated by the European Union must be correctly recognised.
Dr. Sant said the EU is suffering from overstretch and over-reach. Because of them, have emerged the dilemmas and paralysis that affect the Union as it faces the big problems of today – among which the migration crisis, the stand-off in the Ukraine, the tragic Greek muddle and the persisting high unemployment. He said that the solution to Europe’s overstretch and overreach can – at least during a first phase – only be found in political and economic consolidation, not by enhancing overreach.
The Union expanded its commitments and aspirations, but the political will was not really there and the means to carry them out not really available. Meanwhile its soft power outside its borders continued to increase, maintaining the attractiveness of its model, fuelling expectations as to what the Union could do for “people”. We are told that “more Europe” is the solution to this state of affairs. Many European citizens living their daily lives away from the pressures and shared assumptions of political forces involved in the European project, fail to understand what is going on.’ Said Dr. Sant.

Maltese Version – ‘ID-DGĦJUFIJIET TAL-UNION EWROPEA RIŻULTAT TA’ ŻVILUPPI FI ĦDANHA’

Il-Membru Parlamentari Ewropew Alfred Sant qal lill-Parlament Ewropew illum fi Strasbourg li d-dgħjufijiet fi ħdan l-Union Ewropea huma riżultat ta’ żviluppi fi ħdanha, u mhux minn ġrajjiet li ma kinux mistennija fi ħdan jew barra l-Unjoni Ewropea. Dr. Sant, li kien qed jirreaġixxi għad-diskors tal-President Jean Claude Juncker fil-Parlament Ewropew, qal li r-raġunijiet għad-dgħjufijiet li hemm fl-Unjoni Ewropea għandhom jiġu rikonoxxuti.
Dr. Sant qal li ‘l-Unjoni Ewropea qed tiġġebbed iżżejjed biex tipprova tilħaq bogħod iżżejjed.’ Dan wassal biex ifeġġu d-dilemmi u l-paralisi li qed jaffettaw lill-Unjoni Ewropea waqt li llum qed tiffaċċja l-akbar problemi. Fost dawn hemm il-kriżi tal-immigrazzjoni, l-inkwiet fl-Ukraina, it-taħwid traġiku fil-Greċja u l-qgħad dejjem jiżdied b’mod persistenti fl-Unjoni Ewropea. Is-soluzzjoni għal dan it-tiġbid żejjed tal-Unjoni għandu jkun – għall-anqas bħala l-ewwel fażi – konsolidament politiku u ekonomiku, mhux bit-tiġbid żejjed.
L-Unjoni Ewropea, qal Dr. Sant, firxet l-impennji u l-aspirazzjonijiet tagħha, imma ma hemmx rieda politika u lanqas il-mezzi biex tinstab soluzzjoni. Sadanittant barra l-fruntieri tal-Unjoni Ewropea qed jiżdied is-‘soft power’ tal-Unjoni biex minn barra qed jidher bħala mudell tajjeb li qed iżid l-aspettattivi dwarha fost ċittadini barra mill-Unjoni Ewropea. Ilna nisimgħu, qal Dr. Sant, li ‘Aktar Ewropa’ hija s-soluzzjoni għall-problemi li qed jinħolqu. Ħafna ċittadini Ewropej li qed jgħixu l-ħajja tagħhom ’il bogħod mill-pressjonijiet u l-impressjonijiet maħluqa mill-forzi politiċi involuti fil-proġett Ewropew ma jistgħux jifhmu x’qiegħed isir.’ Temm jgħid Dr. Sant.
